Karate-do () in a word:

  • "Kara-te" () in Japanese means "Empty-hand".
  • Today's karate has branches of many streams, known as "Ryu" (), Japanese term for "Styles".  Hence the name, Wado Ryu is one of the many styles in Japanese karate.
  • The word "Do" () means "Way" (in Japanese), some authors generically coined "Karate-do" meaning the "Way of Empty Hand", as karate is wholly learned without the use of weapons.
Wado Ryu () & Wado Kai ()
  • "Kai" () means "Association/Group", so " WADOKAI " () literally means an "Association/Group of Wado" (of the karate style).
  • Simply, Wado Ryu () in Japanese means "Way of Peace" or "Way of Harmony" style.  This Karate style name indicates  the Wado Founding Grand Master's original intention to use Wado Ryu karate training techniques as a means of solving problems in a non-violent way.
