SABAH   KARATEKA    TESTS   POSITIVE

Source: Bernama, 28 Feb. 2006

Malaysia may lose one silver medal it won at the Manila SEA Games in November last year when the Philippine SEA Games Organising Committee (Philsoc) found that national karate exponent Rayner Kinsiong from Sabah was tested positive for the drug 'phentermine', Bernama reported

Head of the national contingent to the Manila Games, Low Beng Choo, however, said the official decision on the withdrawal of the medal would only be known at the meeting of the SEA Games Federation Council in April.

"Philsoc had sent me a letter on Dec 23 last year confirming that the urine test on Rayner carried out at the Doping Control Centre in China found the sample positive of phentermine, a type of substance containing prohibited drugs.

"At the meeting between Rayner and the Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) on Jan 9, the athlete said that he did not take any banned substance, but would abide by any action taken by the World Karate Federation based on the evidence from Philsoc," Beng Choo told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

At the Manila Games from Nov 28 to Dec 5, the Malaysian contingent won a total of 175 medals - 61 gold, 49 silver and 65 bronze.

The karate squad contributed four gold, seven silver and four bronze medals. Beng Choo said Rayner, 27, also refused tests from the B sample to confirm the result of the A sample.

"Based on Rayner's explanation, the athlete only admitted to taking slimming tea to enable him to compete in the 75kg category after the host (the Philippines) did not list his usual event, the Under-80kg category.

"Probably in the process of reducing his body weight to qualify for the 75kg event, Rayner could have inadvertently taken banned substances which were later found to contain phentermine," she said.
