THE  HISTORY  OF  WADO  IN  BRUNEI  DARUSSALAM

WADO-RYU  Karate was first introduced to Brunei in late 1965 by the late Sensei T. Takagi, 5th Dan, Japanese Chief Instructor, while he was working with Daito Company, at Muara.

In 1967, the Brunei State Amateur Judo/Karate Association (BSAJKA)  was officially registered with the Brunei Registrar of Societies.  Under the BSAJKA flagship, WADO-RYU became the first karatedo style practised throughout the country until  thereabouts 1976, when another style arrived in the Brunei Karate scene.

In 1970, Brunei dispatched her very first batch of Bruneians Black belts to Tokyo, Japan to participate in the 1st World Karate-Do Championships.

The following year, in 1972 Brunei sent a 7-man team, all-Wado players, to take  part in the 2nd World Karate-Do Championships held in Paris.  Sensei Malai Mohammed was one of the participants.

After the departure of Sensei T. Takagi from Brunei, he was succeeded by the 2nd Japanese Chief Instructor,  5th Dan, Sensei Toshiaki Toriumi.  He became  BSAJKA's first fully paid instructor  until he left  in 1976.

With the arrival of Sensei Loh Kong Wing in 1976 from Singapore Shito-Ryu, 3rd Dan, now 5th Dan, BSAJKA split into 2 styles, namely Wado-Ryu and Shito-Ryu.

Sensei Hj. Malai Mohammed was then, the appointed Assistant Instructor for Wado-Ryu  Karatedo based in Seria.  He taught at S.R.C (now B.S.R.C), Anthony Abel College, (A.A.C.) and St. Michael's Parish Hall, while Sensei Loh Kong Wing taught Shito-ryu Karatedo at the Pusat Belia both in Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuala Belait.

By the eighties, BSAJKA  had become dysfunctional and inactive.

As early as 1986, the late Pg. Yura Dupa Khoadadad (Shito Ryu) and Sensei Hj. Malai  Mohammed (Wado Ryu) discussed the idea of forming  a new national Karate body without involving Judo.

A series of meetings pursued with a Pro-Tem Committee in 1988, Wado Ryu and Shito Ryu  joined forces to form Brunei Darussalam Karatedo Federation (BRUKAF).

Eventually the Brunei Registrar of Societies approved the registration, and  BRUKAF was born on 30 September 1989.  Wado Ryu became one of BRUKAF's founding members.

WADO-RYU Brunei became affiliated to Wadokai Japan Karatedo Federation (JKF) on 12 May 1996, and subsequently renamed as known today,  WADOKAI KARATEDO BRUNEI DARUSSALAM.
